With spring in full swing (or hopefully just around the corner), we were invited to P.F Chang’s Asian Table near Leicester Square to experience their homage to Hanami, the Japanese tradition of welcoming spring and celebrating the iconic cherry blossom. Nothing says celebration like cake and cocktails, so we couldn’t wait to sample their delightfully themed offerings.
Descending the staircase to the basement bar felt like a springtime saunter in Kyoto. The banisters were lined with pink Sakura blossoms, as were the walls, floors and most of the fixtures. They’ve gone all out in creating a floral atmosphere and paired it with some specially crafted treats. Once seated, our waiter bought us two vibrant Sakura Dream cocktails. Smooth vanilla vodka came blended with grapefruit and guava juice, muddled with lemongrass and orgeat syrup. They provided enough vitamin C to border on being health drinks, save for the sugared flower garnish and the booze of course. We also got to savour the Sakura dream, essentially a mocktail version of the above served tall and cool over ice. They were perfect for soothing fiery tongues ignited by the heat of delicious Dynamite shrimp.
Desserts were fabulously blossom-tastic too. The Cherry Blossom Cheesecake was light, creamy and kissed with hints of citrus, rose and blossom. Pink on top and served with a splash of fruity coulis, it was lovely. As was the Pink Paradise, a massive macaroon filled with fresh raspberries and a matcha ganache. It came with a side of rose ice cream and I’m sure you could guess the colour by now.
If you love sweetness, blossoms and most importantly the colour pink, get down to P.F Chang’s Asian Table in Leicester Square before the end of April to experience the Bloom Room pop up. A true feast for the eyes and the palette.
